Hi Jim,
Have you looked for a firmware upgrade from Creative?  I had this same problem
with my CD-RW drive and then after I found a firmware upgrade all is well.  My
drive is a Memorex however the problem your describing is exactly what happened
to me.  I thought it a loose cable at first also like someone else suggested
but it wasnt.  Hope this helps.
