Yep, I had the same problem. But over the course of 2 weeks I've figured out
how to fix it. 

Go to /etc/X11/. In there, there will be a "file" named "X"
which is actually just a link to the 3.3.6 X server. So remove that symlink
("rm X") and then create a new X symlink, except that this one will point to
the 4.0 xserver ("ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 X") Now restart X, and you
*should* be back in X4.0. 

And on to that topic, what do you use to configure X 4.0? None of the
configuration tools seem to work for X 4.0, and only end up making you go back
to 3.3.6.
