You can check out your XF86config file under the section of pointers.
there is a line here that tells you to uncomment it if your cursor
appears as a white box (to uncomment you have to delete the '#'  and
then save the resulting file)
You can do this in X as root using Kedit or from a command prompt (as
root) using ' pico' or 'vi'
