Alf
The only ways that I can think where hdc will not be touched at all are
2.
   1) Do the Mandrake install in Expert mode do not install either Grub or
Lilo and boot Linux from a floppy.
Even doing this it still may want to write the hdc partition info.
   2) Completly disconnect your hdc, cable and power (you will also have to
either disconnect your burner or set it to master). The Mandrake install
will now find only a system with 1 hd. When the installation completes you
can reconnect your hdc. You will be able to boot Linux with Grub but you
will need to use a boot disk for hdc.
If you do not mind me saying as long as you have backed up your data on
hdc ther is really no reason to go to these extrems. But,of course that is
your choice.
