I went back into Kppp setup and located the 'Modem Volume" control.  After
setting this for a for a
mid range point and confirming that I had selected the "M1L1" on the modem
commands, my
modem audio was back up on the internal speaker.  I didn't have a jumper to
go between the sound
card and the modem, but this is working fine again.
