[newbie] dpms

Hello everyone,
  I was just curious if there is a way to turn off dpms for good.  I have to
turn it off every time I reboot wich wouldnt be bad but every time I forget
about it the system hangs beyond recovery (bug in the hardware or bios does it
with windows too), and I have to use the power button.  I'm this isan easy one
I just can't seem to find the answer..
