used Option2 with success. 

As a real newbie, I had no idea where my rpm packages (or .tar for that
matter) were installed to but used kpackage`s search facility and the File
Finder and got there in the end. Any easier way to do this?

Some programs had their icons in /usr/share/pixmaps so I copied the
relevant .xpm files into /usr/share/icons so that I could add icons to the
kdelink and succeeded with most but could n`t view some icons (although
they were in the right directory).
