The answer depends on several things. First of all, I would upgrade to
7.1, AND get the newest kernel build. I believe 7.1 has support for the
new XFree86 server v. 4.0+, while 7.0 does not, (I could be wrong about
this and would appreciate a correction) and the new server has
significantly upgraded the support for video. S3 has been one of the
last of the cards to get support, and the HOWTO pages at
http://linuxdoc.org can show you how to deal with it.
The important question, however, is does your monitor support the high
refresh rate of 85 Hz? How big is your screen? What color depth are
you running? All of these question bear upon what your refresh rate
will end up being. 85 Hz is the high end of refresh and is mostly
monitor dependent. Practically speaking, anything greater than 70 Hz is
very good indeed, and I would trade the difference for greater color
depth. Also, 4 MB of vram is pretty measely nowadays, and probably
can't support more than 8-bit color depth on a 17 inch monitor at a
refresh of 60 Hz, which is just at the bottom end of acceptable. One
seriously needs about 70 Hz to avoid eyestrain.
Please let us know how you have dealt with this issue, as it is
something that many people are interested in and needing to know.
