I don't think that is the only problem frank.

Have you ever look at an html page on a console?
There is so much on the page!
I think part of the problem is it is sometimes hard
to get to the message with all the code everywhere
if you are using a text only or console mail reader.

Just easier to wade through everything to get to the
meat of the message.  I may be wrong, some mail
readers may do very well at discarding the codes.

I never use a mail reader that can not read html for
that reason.
