Using a CD of 7.0 which I've successfully used on another box,
I encountered a problem with configuring X. Taking the option to
ignore and completing the install, I'm unable to login as root.

Logging in as user and su'ing works (so roots password is fine),
I find the following error messages in install.log:-
        a. 'can't find used secure level. You should correct this
            problem by running /etc/security/msec/init.sh'
(This error a number of times).
        b. linuxconf error 'error in loading shared libraries -
libz.so.1 - no such file or directory' (again a number
            of times).
        c. 'group utmp does not exist - using root'

Looking around, I see that /root/.Xauthority does not exist (I
don't understand exactly what this does or how it's generated,
but it is in the other install).

Running xf86config and offering the same details as during the
installation (they are correct - I have other distributions on this
box), succeeds and I now find I have .Xauthority but still I'm
unable to log in as root.

Can anyone help please? Any info on what .Xauthority is, how
it's generated and what the 'weird' contents mean would be
much appreciated - perhaps pointers to docs - I've been
unable to find out anything so far.

I notice that kdm's log in/out box does not appear when I
reboot into another distribution (this I need to do as I have a
Gigabyte GA-5AX M/B and require 2.2.15pre9 or later
kernel if I want to shutdown - I shall not upgrade the kernel
until logging into as root is possible). John.
