Often this means the XFS (X server) program is not started. You can find
some cures for that on mandrakeuser.org. Did you run Xconfigurator to set
up your X-environment properly? Perhaps you should try less demanding
settings for the video, like less colors, or a lower resolution, to see if
that gets things going.

Otherwise you should "upgrade" your install to set things right.
