I fixed the problem and it installed fine now. Anyway, here's the answer to your
question for the record and in the hope it may steer others in the right direction
with similar problems.

My video card is Trident Blade 3D PCI/AGP (v6.50.5452-11a) and works with Mandrake.
My Abit m'board/BIOS are about a year old and there all kinds of  software settings
for making CDROMS, Zips, etc bootable on start up. So, theoretically, there shouldn't
have been any problem having the CDROM boot. I had disabled PnP in the BIOS settings.
However, in the end what worked was setting the BIOS to default. I still don't know
specifically what did the trick. I didn't need to do that on my other machine with
the same board/BIOS setup and it installed ok. The only major difference was the make
of CDROM - the machine with the Matshita gave me the problem.
