Skip to the last if you wanna avoid a convoluted explaination ;)
Bob, this is nothing other than my limited experiece with 7.1,
a CDrom and CD-RW. I believe it's important just which CD-RW you
have, and if your CDrom is 1998 or newer (ie, protocol compliance),
and ide or scuzzy, ata/33 or 66, and mobo chipset (mine's a Soyo
BX, ata/33). There's enough variables there where nobody can prove
my experience wrong ;>
Not to complicate the situation too much, but i had a cheap Ricoh
7040 IDE with Mdk 7.0. It would only work as slave to my BCD CDRom
(also IDE). Shortly after I installed 7.1, that Ricoh died (not
related, just Ricoh ). I bought a Plextor 8432, but when I
installed it I swapped the BCD to slave and made the Plex master.
This was fine, both Windoze and 7.1 realized I swapped hardware and
order. Problem was many apps (like Xmms, Grip) only wanted to use
my Plex as a CDrom (ie, no way to configure to use 'cdrom2', the
BCD). So I swapped again, making the Plex slave and the BCD master
again. This created a big mess. Now neither CD-- worked, includin
me tryin to delete/re-create the proper links. Winblows got
confused also ;)
Solution: I put the 7.1 install CD in and 'upgraded'. In a few
minutes everything was fixed. :) Here's my fstab:
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0
/mnt/cdrom2 /mnt/cdrom2 supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom2 0 0
Search the 'expert' (might be cooker) archive if you still have
problems. 'Civileme' had some explainations a while back about
'supermount' needing to be enabled for CD-RW's to work properly
with 7.1 and some hardware, altho that aspect wasn't ever a problem
for me and mine. Prob'ly didn't help, did I ?
