The only version of Linux that I know of which has been successfuly installed on 
notebooks to take advantage of winmodems is SuSE Linux.

www.elinux.com (or is it www.e-linux.com?)sells a lot of ibm thinkpds and provides 
instructions on configurin the winmodem to work with SuSE. You might check out their 
site, and possibly call to beg and plead for assistance.

I do know that any winmodem under Linux will be slower since the mainboard CPU has to 
do all the processing for it.
