a) the link was to chapter 8 of the mandrake user guide reference manual
b) i may have tried it as root but i didn't try running it from a
terminal - voila! however what you get is the graphical installation
routine for the i586 asking questions that the i486 text install doesn't
ask, the i486 doesn't have one (at least not on my version - no .img
file for it), this is confusing me, i think i need to find someone who
has done this, anyway i tried it and i got error messages when i got to
the part about setup filesystems so i stopped
