If you are networked, it's probably best NOT to run these services.  Go to
your /etc/inetd.conf file and comment out every line you don't need.  After
you make the changes, you'll have to restart inetd (header in inetd.conf
should tell you how).  If you want telnet and ftp type services, your best
bet is to use a secure shell implementation.  Look at www.ssh.com or
www.openssh.org.

I've been reading Maximum Linux Security recently, and it's helped me a
lot -- you may want to invest in a Linux security book if you'll be doing
mission critical work (or if you just don't want the hassle of being
cracked).
