Ok...Ed, here's what ya do. At the LILO prompt type 'linux single'. Where
I have typed linux you type what ever you've named that partition. Like on
my machine I like the label name to be short. Mine is 'lin'.
Anyway, at the prompt type 'linux single' without the quotes of course and
then hit <ENTER>.
This will take you to a bash prompt. at the bash prompt you can start
linuxconf and take care of your problem. the first thing you want to do is
to turn off the ipchains service that is at the moment set to start up at
boot time. when linuxconf comes up open 'control panel' then 'control
service activity'. find the 'ipchains' service in the list, choose it from
the list and set it's status to either 'manual' or disabled. either one
will work for you.
now, close linuxconf, and at the bash prompt type 'reboot' and hit
<ENTER>. at the LILO prompt type the label name for the linux partition ,
'linux 3'. this will take you to run level 3. which is the console login
screen. from here you can log in as root, run linuxconf and clean up the
mess. I would suggest that you do this in console so that you don't raise
any more dust than you have to. if you need to navigate around your system
and you're not proficient at doing so in a terminal window or the console
you can use the file manager named Midnight Commander. On the command line
type 'mc' and hit <ENTER>. A DOS like screen will start up and from there
you will instantly know what to do.
MC has the ability to edit, view, copy, delete, so and so forth. It is a
very powerful console file manager/editor/viewer. I can't do without
it. In fact I use it more than any of the other file managers on my
Mandrake 7.1 system.
Good luck and remember...breath in...breath out. Repeat this process until
everything looks better. Then dive in and before you know it you'll have
everything back to normal.
