Sorry I cannot help you with the other stuff. But to use your own backgrounds in WindowMaker you need to copy or move them to: /home/yourusername/GNUstep/Library/WindowMaker/Backgrounds And then select the background from the WindowMaker left mouse-click menu. What goes in the directory goes onto the menu. Alternatively you can use wmakerconf (I think it's called) a GUI frontend for setting up WindowMaker.
