Hi!

It means that your modem isn't sending this "toot" you always hear when you
pick up the phone (Should be a funny explanation to everyone whose native
language is English! ;) ), maybe the cables aren't connected properly or you
have chosen the wrong device, if you are using COM1 it should be /dev/modem
or /dev/ttys0.
