Yes, but sometimes you don't need all that compiling. Hopefully the tarball
contains README and INSTALL files that will give you the information on
whether you need to configure, and compile the source code, before you make
the install.

If the tarball contains only the sourcecode, and nothing has been done
previously to speed the install on your brand of linux, you will need all
the steps below. but, sometimes you don't
