My guess is that things aren't as strange as you suspect....<G>...the password
error you are getting is just that, whatever you think the password isn't what is
set
up on the mail server. The reason you can send mail is that SMTP is a non
authenticated
protocol and hence doesn't require password authentication. (there is an
authenticated
variant but most mail systems use the plain vanilla implementation)
