Because linux (by default) sets up floppy drives for the 'vfat'
filesystem.
If you want to read/write 'ext2' file system, you need to mount the
drive explicitly.
Take a look at 'man mount' and 'man fstab' - (without the quotes) from
your terminal prompt.
