I sure gave this guy the wrong answer :-)  Didn't understand (my fault not
his) what he was asking until I read your answer.  Of course you're
right.  

I learned something the hard way, though.  Always let these
user-install programs initiate a new set of files before you put your
old ones in place.  If you don't, they often don't install what's needed
for them to function properly as they "think" the user is already
installed since there is a set of config files present.  I just got stung
by this and while it was no big deal, Pine wouldn't work for me until I
simply removed my existing .pinerc file (actually I just renamed it), ran
pine so it could do its thing (and I have yet to figure out what that
"thing" is) and then I copied my .pinerc over the one it had just
made.  This made the difference between me being able to send mail or not.
