Hi Jeff,

As root you can run linuxconf, and in the 'basic' configuration you can
change the name of your machine to anything you like.

A name can be just one word, so that would be fine. Perhaps even 1 letter
would do already, never tried that ;-)

Mail programs react differently to stuff, but when you are on
localhost.localdomain and your mailer sends from <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
without assistance on your end, then a machine named "jeffsbox" or so
would not change that behaviour.
