[newbie] Modem connection question

I have been able to get Linux to recognize my LT Winmodem and dial my ISP. However, as soon as the connection is made it is immediately disconnected with the daemon dying unexpectedly. KPPP then locks up Linux and I have to reboot.   Any ideas?   Thanks.
