OK... Very Very cool. I figured out my problems. with my laptop. I loaded Redhat 6.2 Gnome vs KDE and entered in all my server info. I still had a problem with no Kernel module for the 3c574tx PCMCIA. I tried a kernel module simular (3c509) and FAILED. I then tried the more versitile and compatible driver I know of. I tried the TULLIP module and saw the thing configure in front of my eyes! Here is the steps I took to install properly:

start xwindows (startx)
Open a terminal logged as ROOT. type control-panel. go to the chick with the wand... enter all yer server info - at interfaces, there should be 2 things: lo (loopback) and eth0. if there is no eth0, add one. in my case, added dhcp proto no ip or subnet. do not activate yet. goto the kernel in control-panel then add module eth0 tullip dont enter io or interupt. the system will determin it for you. save changes on kernel. go back to chick with wand (network configurator) goto interfaces activate eth0. watch your terminal window... it should say somthing about determining ip from host or something like that. close control panel once complete. use the reboot command and it should once rebooted let you onto internet. i see activity on the lcd screen for the pcmcia adapter onboard my laptop (status screen) open netscape type in a address.

if this dont work with 3c574tx, generic card services, redhat 6.2 with gnome desktop stock with no updates, then either their is a hardware failure, or the server info is been entered incorrectly. (be sure to contact your isp's tech support for adsl setup and server info.) make sure network is plugged in upon config.

just wanna help :-)

Jim,

I noticed you have a Cisco 675 on dsl. I am using Verizon for dsl access (bronze package) I just recently bought a Cisco 675. I'm have some of the same issues with Redhat and my laptop (a generic from maxstation) wich has a 3com 3c574tx PCMCIA nic. Redhat 6.2 will init the card services and notice there is a 56k modem and the nick below it. However, There is no kernel module for this card.

I just recently got my other big redhat system up on the net using my previous router (external Fujitsu SpeedPort) Unlike the Cisco, you cannot telnet into this router. it's all done automatically internally. Verizon just changed it's domain (previously dsl.gtei.net. Now it's dsl.vz.genuity.com with a new DHCP server address.

Here is the way my redhat system is setup this is in 6.2. I used Xwindows from the control panel to get this info: (I hope this helps a little)

Subject: [newbie] Networking setup for PCMCIA on laptop

Hello,

I have a Compaq Presario 1230 laptop with a PCMCIA card and am trying to set it up to have TCP/IP network access through my DSL service.  I am connecting to a hub that is connected to a Cisco 675 external router.

I have been using the NETCONF utility and have entered the LAN address of the router as 10.0.0.1 and then set up DNS addresses with my ISP.  I get lights on the dongle and the hub but no action.  I am not sure how to get the system to recognize the Ethernet access through the PCMCIA card.  In the Basic Host information setup I used the "dummy0" option as was recommended in the Help for the adaptor.  I am not sure what to put as the "Host.Domain" entry.  I have an NT server on the network and at some point want to get the Linux to see the server but the first goal is to basic network connectivity.  In the adaptor setup I also enabled  DHCP so the 675 would give me a NAT address.  I would appreciate some help knowing what I am missing or have set up incorrectly.  Do I need to know more about the PCMCIA card and configure that somewhere?  Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks...Jim
