I am trying to install the KDE2 Mandrake RPM binaries on a Linux
Mandrake 7.1 system. The README says that this was designed
for a 7.2 but "should work on all systems".

I have upgraded all of the packages (from Cooker) that were
requested when I used rpm to upgrade kdesupport-2* and kdelibs-
2*. Everything went fine to that point.

When I try to install kdebase-2*, I get the following:
        kdebase2 requires menu > 2.1.5-34 (menu-2.1.5-19 version
installed by default in LM 7.1)

When I try to upgrade menu-2.1.5-19 to menu 2.1.5-42, which is on
Cooker ftp sites, I get the following:
menu requires rpm > 3.0.5-22 (rpm 3.0.4 installed by default in
LM 7.1)

When I try to upgrade rpm to v. 3.0.5-27, which is on Cooker ftp
sites, I get the following:
menu <2.1.5-29 is incompatible with rpm 3.0.5-27.

I tried uninstalling menu (rpm -e), but the system warns about
dependencies to a bunch of window managers and X11, so I
thought better of that. It also isn't obvious how one might uninstall
rpm 3.0.4 and subsequently install 3.0.5 using rpm.

Any ideas how to get around these problems to install kdebase-2?
Has anyone compiled the kde2 rpms to work on LM7.1?

TIA,
Paul
