might be possible to use another copy of linux such as floppy base to replace the password file, i think this is a high probable yes, however i can not be certain the folder the password file is in could be encrypted , there are many possibilitys but considering not much has been done to the system i would say give a whack at it and see what happens your just losing a little time yet learning new things about a system
