Hi,

I posted a round of messages regarding problems burning with my Iomega CD-RW
I stopped posting when I believed I had found the problem, but now I realise
that I was wrong and that the problem remains.

The problem is that my drive is speed-rated at 8 (write) x 4 (rewrite) x 32
(read), but I can only burn CD-Rs at 8-speed if burning from an ISO in
Windows 2000 (I use Nero 5). I cannot burn ISOs at 8-speed in Linux (I tried
with the Mandrake 7.2 ISOs). If I try to burn on-the-fly (i.e. without
creating an image first), Nero burns at a maximum of 2x speed (after testing
the speed of my drive), even after I have set the speed to 8x. If I turn off
speed testing in Nero or if I burn in cdrecord (Linux) using a variety of
front-ends (Gcombust, Gnome Toaster, X-CD-Roast, Eroaster and KisoCD) I get
buffer underruns after a few minutes. I can only burn successfully on-the-fly
in both Nero and cdrecord if I burn at 2x maximum.

Could this be a hardware problem? It appears to be, since the problem affects
both Windows and Linux. I don't think this is a firmware problem, since this
drive has been out for a while and there is still no new firmware release on
the Iomega website.

Thanks.
