It's been eliminated.  One alternative is as follows: Set SysV to 
usermode 5.  This boots directly to X using kdm and allows you to 
select your GUI at login.  When you logout from the GUI you are 
returned to the kdm screen, from which you can login to another 
GUI.  If you are uncomfortable booting directly to X, you can get a 
console when you get the kdm login screen by using Ctrl-Alt-F2.  
(From a console, use Alt-F7 [rather than startx] to get back to an X 
login.)
