I have ordered the CDs so this may all be moot tomorrow, but I was
impatient...

While I was away for the holiday, I set my box off to download the entire
linux-mandrake installer (yes, the whole gigabyte of stuff via FTP - and it
worked!). Following the instructions in ../i586/INSTALL.txt I created a
boot floppy from the image at ../i586/images/hd.img. The problem is this
floppy will not boot. When I try to boot the floppy, the console displays:

SYSLINUX 1.48 MDK-Cooker Copyright (C) 1994-1999 H. Peter Anvin

And then, just hangs there. I've tried recreating the floppy a couple of
times with different, new floppies (dd if=hd.img of=/dev/fd0), but same
results each time. Any clues what I'm doing wrong?
