Did you really try all the three alternatives for the DeskJet 500, the
"HP DeskJet, Foomatic + deskjet" and the "HP DeskJet Series, CUPS v1.1"?
Especially the "GIMP-Print" drivers are of a very high quality. You also
should check the options of the drivers, often a low resolution is set
as default. To optimize your default options, go to
http://localhost:631/printer/ where you see an entry for every printer
on your machine and click on the "Configure printer" button of the entry
of your DeskJet Portable and set up the options to the desired values.
In "kups" click on the entry of your printer with the right mouse button
and choose "Configure printer". For setting the printer options for a
particular printout, use "xpp" or "qtcups" instead of "lpr".
