This may be a silly question, but (assuming you're in KDE) did you check
kmix to make sure the balance was properly set? If not, type kmix in at a
command line, and just make sure the slider across the bottom is dead
center. Theres no line that shows where that is, but your ears will let
you know ;-)
Oh, and if you set that, make sure you then click File and Save current
settings as default, or you'll have to do it every time you reboot...
