Jon....You need to install /usr/bin/xscanimage as a gimp 
plug-in by creating a symlink called xscanimage to 
/usr/bin/xscanimage in ~/.gimp-1.1/plug-ins.  After that a 
new item called 'acquire image' will appear on the 'Xtns' 
drop-down-menu.  Then the 'acquire image' menu choice in gimp 
will access your scanner with the xscanimage program.
