Go to Goggle and search 'agp' or 'accelerated graphics port' (all
your other pci ports are also capable of graphics acceleration).
Basically you'll find that it's an extension of the PCI
specifications, and runs on your systems 33mhz pci bus. Further search
will reveal that some hardware combinations have various/serious
problems with it. Further search and experience will show that it's
mostly hype designed to sell you new hardware, specially the 2x and 4x
stuff. Even further search will make apparent that there's a lot of so
called AGP hardware out there ... that isn't.
http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/98q3/980702/ begins to explain
agp and how this pci spec can actually degrade overall system
performance.
Bottom line is, buy an AGP card? Anwer is yes, but thoroughly
investigate it's usability with the chipset/motherboard you intend to
use it with, and keep in mind that the performance promises are mostly
hype, and that agp can cause more problems than it's worth.
