I've stayed out of this, but you're right. Over many different
installations I've had ext2 or ReiserFS Linux partitions come before,
after, and in between fat 16 or 32 partions, most often in extended
(Windoze speak is 'logical') partitions. No problems.
BUT, that doesn't mean there can't be problems that others have
described mixing vfat and Linux partitions. It's usually because the
hardware is poor and/or misconfigured tho.
