Hi Brian,
Very strange that this happens, SCSI should sort itself out easily. I have
a similar internal burner which is recognized without a problem.

Do you see, in the boot-up messages from Mandrake, that the SCSI card
itself is recognized and initialized? What model card is it? I have an
Adaptec 2940UW and the messages clearly show that it is loaded and
funtional.
