Hi all

I fouled up when installing qt-x11-2.2.3.tar.gz on linux-mandrake 7.1
system.

The qt install instructions want qt in /usr/local but lmdk does not use
the /usr/local directory for any thing but Interbase. lmdk puts qt under
/usr/lib I unpacked in /usr/lib

I used ./configure without any options when installing qt. Opera
tells
me that I should have used the -gif option. Also I noticed just
after
pushing the "go" key that jpeg and 2 or 3 other items (inc gif) were
disabled as part of the default ./config install.

Question:
1. Can I un-make or un-install qt-2.2.3 so that I can re-configure
correctly. If so what is the command (or do I just use delete) and in
what directory would I use it, etc. The qt instructions did not ask me
to 'make install' after make, following which I could have used 'make
uninstall' - according to instructions I have for a different programme.

2. I installed in /usr/lib. A new directory was made under ./config
called
qt-2.2.3 which was renamed qt as per the qt install instructions. Are
all the qt files and references restricted to this directory and
sub-directories, ie., can I mearly delete this directory "qt" and start
again unpacking in /usr/lib/qt2/lib using switches to turn on gif and
jpeg + whatever, which would then place the new qt in the same
directory as the older qt lib files as noted below.

Before installing, existing "/usr/lib/qt" directory was renamed
"qt-old".
Lmdk 7.1 as loaded used /usr/lib/qt/ for the readme, tutorials and html
files only. The original mdk qt lib files were left in
/usr/lib/qt2/lib/qt/ viz.,
libqt.s0.2 and libqt.s0.2.1

Can I delete directory "qt-old" - the files seem to be duplicated in
qt-2.2.3

I am not consistant in where I (or rather make) have put files. I didn't
like to move files around after install without knowing what I am doing.
If I simply move the files after installing will this cause a
problem later. I presume the lib* files should be all in the same place
lmdk placed them so that when installing a lmdk rpm it will know where
to look.

Never the less I installed and ran opera last night - it flies, both the
loading of web pages and the downloads compared to netscape which i
currently use all the time - haven't figured postfix yet, can receive
but not send. Opera down load's seem/are much faster. I used opera in M$
Win98 - same thing.
The opera web pages, depending on the site, lack the fancy images/icons.

I would like to install qt properly. Which directory should I put the
tar.gz file in for unpacking so that the files are placed all together
in /usr/lib/qt2/lib/qt/ (the original lmk directory) EG: rename this qt
as qt-old; gunzip in -/qt2/lib/ then tar which produces a directory
qt-2.2.3; rename to qt;
run ./configure --??????? . Then - move the original lmk qt2/lib/qt
files back into /qt2/lig/qt now loaded with the new qt-2.2.3

I would appreciate basic for idiot instructions, eg., how would I append
the ./config command with the correct switches to have qt installed and
usable by what ever programme I installed in the future that might need
all the options that are not default.

Thanks for your time. Sorry about the verbosity.
Alan Smith
