[newbie] User drake error

Hi all,

I got the following error message when trying to access the user drake:

     cannot lock user lib
      'file /etc/gtmp'  or
       'file /etc/ptmp'  exist                              

I got around the problem by renaming the files to
 /etc/gtmp1
/etc/ptmp1

My question is, what are these files and are they safe to delete?
