Mazen,
Actually, if you've got Postfix, or Sendmail running on your Linux box
it's already to go. If you've got a static IP address, or you're using a
service like I am, dyndns.org, the only configuring that you "have" to do
at that point is to give your computer a host name. Other than
"localhost". That one won't work for obvious reasons.
You can set the host name using Linuxconf->Networking. You must set the
Host name and the IP address of your machine. Once that is done you call
the mail server my naming the host.domain.com.
Example:
My machine's name, i.e. the host, is mdw1982. The domain I'm in is
dyndns.org. Therefore the mail server's name is mdw1982.dyndns.org. Unless
I setup a machine as a seperate mailserving machine, which most ISP's do,
the mail servers name is the same as the machine that the software,
(Postfix/Sendmail) resides on.
It's really no more complicated then that. After that all that is needed
to do is setup the accounts for those that will be accessing the machine
to pickup their mail. If they happen to be folks that already have user
accounts on that machine then there are already a number of programs
native to your Linux machine that they can view their mail with. If you're
real adventurous it's even possible to convince Netscape Messenger to use
your native mailserver to get the mail from it much in the same way that
it would poll a pop3 server for the mail.
If you wish people to access the mailserver "as" a pop3 server to collect
their mail, then you will again have to setup "pop3" accounts for them.
This too is fairly simple, and straight-forward and can be done in a few
minutes using Linuxconf. You would add then as pop3 accounts in a very
similar way that you add regular users to your system. When they access
their accounts to collect their email they would reference the
host.domain.com exactly as you've defined it as previously explained
above.
Thats a brief, maybe over simplified explanation, but that's the nuts and
bolts of it.
Good luck and have fun...
