I am having a tough time getting my soundcard to work under Linux. First
of all I installed Mandrake 7.1 because I have a Promise UDMA/66 IDE
controller which most other releases of Linux do not recognise (I tried
Redhat 7.0 and Mandrake 7.2 without luck). So Mandrake 7.1 worked and most
of the hardware was recognised but the soundcard (Soundblaster Live!
Value) has been a real problem. I used Hardrake and it picked up the card
but all the parameters were set at -1 and no sound was playing on the
test. I tried sndconfig and again it recognised the card but no sound
played. I tried the commercial OSS driver (emu10k1) and something happened
which looked reasonable in the /dev/sndstat file but again no sound. The
support guys there suggested I needed to check cable connections but since
the card works fine under Windoze I am sure that is not a problem. I can
play wav files using the OSS driver and the mixer seems OK just no sound.
I checked the IRQ and it matches that used under Windoze. I have tried
both the regular emu10k1 driver and the alsa drivers without luck. I am
beginning to think that the ide recognition under Mandrake 7.1 did
something to the soundcard recognition (I read something wierd about
UDMA/66 patches under 2.2.x Linux kernels saying that for Mandrake 7.1 the
patch `breaks` recognition of certain other hardware. Any leads would be
greatly appreciated- this problem is very frustrating as everything else
about Linux has more than lived up to my expectations. System Details:
