I am looking into which startup services I should enable/disable via the
Startup Services section of DrakConf. I am not too sure on whether I need
certain services and their descriptions (as given in DrakConf) are not too
helpful. The corresponding section in mandrakeuser.org doesn't seem to have
been updated for LM7.2. I shall list my services below and append an asterisk
(*) to services that I have enabled.

anacron *
crond *
cups *
drakfont *
gpm *
harddrake
inet
ipchains *
keytable *
kheader *
kudzu
ldap
linuxconf *
mcserv
netfs
network *
ntpd
numlock *
oki4daemon
random *
rawdevices
sound *
syslog *
usb
xfs *

I have turned off several services, including harddrake and kudzu (since my
hardware setup is OK). I don't think I need netfs, since I don't use NFS,
SMB, or NCP. I am not too sure about inet, keytable (I have an US keyboard),
kheader, numlock (is it really worth having a daemon just to turn num lock
on?), and rawdevices. Drakfont slows my startup time by almost ten seconds,
and I'm not sure whether I need it. I have converted my Windos fonts via
Drakfont to be used by Linux, but do they really need to be checked every
time I boot? Similarly, linuxconf slows my startup by a noticable degree, but
I assume that I need this (I do use Linuxconf, the app).

Thanks for any help.
