Nothing is /proc is real. These are all 'virtual' files that contain various
useful and interesting things, like your memory. It exists to make it
easier to access and change various kernel interfaces, and when you read or
write /proc files you just change the various kernel parameters that the files
reference. They don't take any real disk space.

Well, you can try debian, as it uses the same package manager :). Seriously,
I second your motion. I have heard very nice things about apt in particular,
how easy it makes upgrades take place, installs and so forth. A version of
it does exist in contrib but it is not yet officially a part of Mandrake. The
package does compile & install OK but the /etc/apt/sources.list doesn't
include anything useful, so when you attempt to upgrade something you get a
load of 'not in keyring' messages.
Alternatively, give MandrakeUpdate a try. rpm in and of itself isn't all that
hard to get used to if you're familiar with package managers, and there are
quite a few graphical front ends for you to try out (gnorpm, kpackage, etc.)
