Excuse the long delay Moose, but netscape was down for a good while. This happens one
more time and I'm going to send this list to one of my other email accounts! Ok so we
want to optimize our kernel?
First, type in this command:
procinfo -asm
cat /proc/pci
cat /proc/..
better yet...
let us be GUI about this since I'm explaining this for newbies and beyond to
understand.
open up harddrake:
harddrake
or click on harddrake from the file menu as
this lists everything that is currently running on your system. Save it to file print
it out, write it down, or whatever you do, just remember this information. As it is
important in determining how you are going to configure your kernel. All the
information that you get from harddrake will help determine what you need on your
system.
Second,
the hardware. Make sure you got the information from make and model to slot and port.
Don't sweat the IRQ at this time.
Third,
Take note of what filesystems you have on your system.
Fourth,
take note of what services you are running on your computer.
Fifth,
Now, we get right into the process.
I can't go into detail at this time as my baby daughter is waiting on me. i will
finish if this "guide" is not enough. But basically, don't setup options for hardware
or the like that you don't have on your system. Your system actually wastes time
trying to search for the right driver if you have many set for one type of device or
feature. I know, I know if you plan to add a Webcam with a USB connector to your USB
ports but don't currently have anything plugged into them, don't include support for
it! You can always recompile it in when it becomes available to do so. If you don't
have PCMCIA hardware on your system, don't provide support. The rules are simple. I
just showed the way. Now, you must take the next step...
and see how deep the rabbit hole leads.
