I, too, am interested in a solution to this problem. I installed Linux
Mandrake 7.1 on my P3.. everything worked but my USB toys and my sound
card. My sound card is an SB AWE 64 (c) -- according to Linux and while
browsing these messages, I read in here that I should try running
sndconfig from a text console, and I did, and it played the digital
portion of it's test, but died miserably on the midi portion. After
that, no matter what I did, sndconfig kept crashing. I finally got it
fixed when I asked a friend what he thought. We added the line:

options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330

to my modules.conf file and the lines:

/sbin/modprobe sb
/sbin/modprobe awe_wave

to my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file.

Then, I got this brilliant idea to upgrade my kernel. I was running
2.2.16 (the one that came with Mandrake 7.1) and I decided to upgrade to
2.2.18 because I heard it had better USB support. Well, my USB toys
still don't work. The good news: my AWE 64 is still working
beautifully.. The bad news: I can't get my computer to recognize my
SCSI Yamaha 8424S CD burner as a block device. I can't mount it on any
mountpoint. Automount doesn't work, can't play audio cd's on it,
nuttin. however, a scan of the SCSI bus will show it there.. it works
under windoze still.. Very confusing.. If anyone can use my
experiences with my sound card to their advantage, I wish them the best
of luck. If anyone can help me with my SCSI cd burner or any of my USB
devices, I'd be eternally grateful!

Here is a list of the hardware in my computer:

Houston Technologies M869 P-III Motherboard (VIA Apollo/Apollo Pro
chipset onboard)
 - onboard Soundpro Soundcard (bios disabled!)
 - onboard USB port x2 (detected and driver installed by Mandrake kernel
2.2.16)
nVidia TNT2-32 MB AGP video card (detected by Mandrake as a PCI card..
Grrr..)
128 MB PC-133 SDRAM
SIIG 910U PCI SCSI card
External Yamaha 8424S SCSI CD Burner (unable to be recognized as a block
device by Mandrake.. Grrr..
Fujitsu 20GB hard drive
Realtek 8029 (detected on install, using NE2K-PCI driver.. works
nicely!)
External USRobotics Courier V.Everything 56K modem on Com 2
Logitech iFeel HID compliant vibrating USB mouse (Mandrake unable to
match driver with device ID code!)
Microtek Slimscan C6 USB scanner (Mandrake unable to match driver with
device ID code!)
Logitech QuickCam USB digital camera (Mandrake unable to match driver
with device ID code!)
Belkin 4 port USB hub (built for the Mac, but works just fine under both
Windoze and Mandrake 7.1)

If anyone can assist me with the configuration of any of the
above-mentioned hardware, I would be eternally grateful.. I really like
Linux, but I'm not going to run it 100% until I get it configured
properly.. (this could take the rest of my life if I plug away at it
alone... <G>) Sorry for rambling on.. I've had a heck of a time with my
puter.. I tried to add a new entry to the menu on GRUB.. wound up
installing LILO overtop of GRUB.. <G> then, 2 days AFTER I *fixed* it,
I saw instructions on how to work with GRUB in linuxconf.. (AARGH!!)
<G> at least it's sorta working now.. hehehe Thanks for your time!
