Hi Mark,
    And of course..., isn't this just a part of what makes Linux such an appealing 
operating system:  CHOICE.  Use what you like.  Windoze, or for that matter, Mac users 
are provided a desktop by the OS, PERIOD.  They can make cute little customizations, 
but basically they will work the way the OS tells them to work.  With our OS we have 
dozens of choices about how we work.  To Each Their Own!
    Funny thing is, on my home box, I have a 750mz Thunderbird w/ 256M of RAM, so 
speed is not that big an issue for the desktop environment.  I've just gotten so 
comfortable w/ Blackbox, I've even started to install some new Themes (or Styles as 
the BB folks like to call them) just for a little eye candy (check out the "laetitia" 
theme ;o) )
Enjoy what you're most comfortable with as a desktop.
