That really depends on you. Do you need something that 2.4.x
provides? ...or do you want a 2.4.x just for the fun of it? Either
reason or anything inbetween is valid, but you'll need to do a little
more than with a 2.2.x upgrade.

You'll need to compile rather than just install the binary rpm
upgrade to maintain complete LM 7.x functionality. I recommend using
kernel-doc-2.4.2-4mdk
kernel-headers-2.4.2-4mdk
kernel-source-2.4.2-4mdk or newer (eg, -5mdk). Older patch levels
had some quirks. Use the kernel upgrade instructions at
mandrakeuser.org You'll also need to uprade to 'modutils-2.4.2-2mdk'
and 'ppp-2.4.0-3mdk' or newer. I use the cooker src rpms, and rebuild
'em on my 7.2 system.

Some things to watch for during config (eg, 'make xconfig'):
enable (Y), '2.2 ... style ipchains' so that you can still use apps
like PMfirewall, or to retain your present ipchains firewall. Enable
(Y) vfat support if you dual boot Windoze. Leave 'supermount' and
'ReiserFS' as modules if you use those.

Also, BEFORE you boot any 2.4.x kernel, you need to edit
/etc/rc.d/init.d/mandrake_everytime and change the location of
'supermount.o' to the new location that 2.4.x kernels use (eg,
/lib/modules/<2.4.2 version>/kernel/fs/supermount/supermount.o ).
If you don't do this 'supermount' will be disabled and your 'fstab'
will be overwritten. Keep in mind that booting a 2.2.x kernel after
doing this edit will also disable supermount and overwrite fstab.
So make a bakup copy of your current /etc/fstab in the event you want
to go back to 2.2.x (and read 'man supermount')

If you have any ramdisk requirements (almost everybody does), don't
forget to run 'mkinitrd' as per the mandrakeuser.org instructions.
If you followed mandrakeuser's advice on 'Makefile' edits, and also
used their suggested steps (particularly 'make install') to compile the
kernel and modules, then all the proper files and links are installed
for you in /boot. Just check lilo or grub, and boot your new kernel.

If you haven't got the slightest idea about all the above, then
it's prob'ly wise to wait for Mandrake 8.0 ;>
