[newbie] loggin in and using the ip address

When I log in, it gives my ip address and says welcomd ---.--.---. The dashes 
representing ip nos. Could it be that I have this setting wrong? I went in as 
root and typed make postfix, and It complained about these nos. If so, how do 
I change this?
