if you are in the command line before to enter in x windows you have to type
startx -- -bpp 24
for 24 bits resolution
or
startx -- -bpp 16
for 16 bits
etc

Does anyone know how to change the resolution at startup before it goes
into X?

I know it is possible but I am not sure how to do it.
