You shouldn't need to make this registry change; however if you don't, then
you need to ensure that the following line is in the global section of
/etc/smb.conf

encrypt passwords = yes

I can't speak for Win9x, but NT used encrpyted passwords over the network
from SP3 onwards, and so does Win2000.

You may need to install Samba 2.07 in order for Win2k clients to work
correctly: there were some specific bugs fixed relating to Win2k.
